DocMorris & Unicarepharmacy Press Release:

DocMorris & Unicarepharmacy welcome Minister’s decision to allow pharmacist administration of flu vaccinations

DocMorris & Unicarepharmacy welcome last week's announcement by the PSI (Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland) that the Minister for Health has approved legislation to allow pharmacists to administer winter flu vaccinations to Irish patients.  Ireland’s largest pharmacy chain is currently preparing to offer the service in over 30 of its branches as soon as HSE supply arrangements are finalised, expected within 2 weeks.

Any Irish adult, regardless of whether or not they pay for their medicines, can avail of this service.  Those aged over 65 years and on the General Medical Services Scheme (Medical Card) will be entitled to receive it for free at their pharmacy or their GP.  Fees for all other patients are at the discretion of each pharmacy participating in the service.  It is hoped that this change will make winter flu vaccination more accessible to Irish customers, thereby increasing uptake.  It is also likely that it will reduce the cost to consumer, with GPs charging up to €65 for the same service.

Cormac Tobin, Managing Director of DocMorris & Unicarepharmacy, explains why the chain has decided on a €20 fee for customers under the age of 65: ‘It was a very easy decision to keep our fee for this service affordable for all of our customers.  This is another exciting development for Irish pharmacy and we don’t want to tarnish it by attempting to ‘cash-in’ at the expense of the Irish consumer.’

It is as yet unclear what the charge for this service will be across the board but another major pharmacy chain set a price of €30 last year.  DocMorris & Unicarepharmacy generated headlines in February this year when another previously prescription only medicine (Emergency Contraception/’Morning After Pill’) became available in Irish pharmacies without prescription by offering it at a price of €15, with prices in other pharmacies ranging from €25 - €45.

Tobin continues ‘it can’t all be about short-term profit.  It has to be about keeping your customers happy and healthy, which will benefit us as a company in the long run.’

The primary focus of the HSE’s Winter Flu campaign this year will be to encourage all those aged over 65 to avail of the vaccine.  However, there are many people under the age of 65 who could also benefit, including those with long-term medical conditions, pregnant women and family carers.  The vaccine, administered in the pharmacy via injection, helps to prevent flus during the winter months.
